If you have read the information in our getting started guide, then you will have seen some of the benefits of e-learning and perhaps have had some ideas of how you might like to use it yourself. But the task of fleshing out your ideas, getting to grips with the technology and making sure you achieve effective results may still feel daunting.

The E-Learning Unit is available to help you through every step of the process, from developing your initial ideas through to implementing them in practice and evaluating the end result. We can also offer plenty of hints and tips to help keep your e-learning activity in proportion and keep your workload manageable.

Some examples of the kinds of support we can offer are listed here:

Rethinking teaching with technology

E-Learning has evolved from its early days when commentators predicted that everything could be computerised. The modern approach puts student learning at its heart, and selectively blends face-to-face teaching with technology to provide an improved student experience.
The E-Learning Unit can advise on the technologies that might be suitable for your circumstances and suggest student activities that will promote effective learning. We can point you towards useful resources or contacts at Surrey or elsewhere who have done similar things.
Whether you want to improve the speed of feedback, develop student group work, revitalise your lectures, or build learning communities with off-campus students, then e-learning may help. Please get in touch to discuss your ideas.

Implementing your plans

Implementing your plans can feel like an challenge, especially if the course you attended is a long forgotten memory or the reality is just more complicated than the simple examples in the workbook.
The E-Learning Unit are here to support you. If you wish to apply for funding, incorporate commercial content into a module, produce videos of lectures for viewing on demand, deliver student inductions, try out a new technology, or just would like a handy reminder of which buttons to push to make it all work, we’re happy to help.

Evaluating the student and staff experience
Experience is a great way of learning, and we can help you reflect on what you have done to develop it into the future. We say in our courses, “don’t expect to get everything right first time”, so evaluating and learning from our experiences is an important part of the process.
Whether its further developing the ideas that worked well, or refining those that were less successful, we’re happy to work with you to help you build on what you have achieved so far.

If you would like support with any of the areas listed here, or have anything else related to e-learning that you would like to discuss, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us:
