Vicki Simpson – Head of the E-learning Unit

Vicki leads a team that works in partnership with academic Schools to promote efficient and pedagogically sound approaches to e-learning across the university. She is also responsible for guiding the institution’s e-learning policies and co-ordinating a strategic approach to the development of e-learning. The work of the team and recommended good practice is informed by investigation, evaluation and research in this area.

Vicki joined the university in 1997 to set up a team responsible for central co-ordination and support of e-learning; this has continued to grow in size and remit. Prior to this post, she has worked on variety of institutional and national projects related to learning technology and e-learning since 1992.

She has a M.A. (Hons) in English Literature and Language from Aberdeen University, a M.Sc in Computer Science from the University of Kent and an M.A. in Researching Learning Technology from UCL. Her particular areas of interests are staff development for e-learning, e-learning evaluation and organisational change.

Paul Burt – E-learning Development Adviser

Paul’s role is to support staff in the implementation of effective e-learning practice and to work on University-wide developments which seek to establish appropriate technologies and services for enhancing learning and teaching. His role has particular regard to visual design, web accessibility, multimedia and classroom technologies.

Paul joined the University of Surrey in August 2003. He has worked within education since 1991, including seven years at Chichester University as Head of Media Services and two years in FE colleges as a lecturer in multimedia and graphic design. Paul has a PGCE in ‘Post-Compulsory Education’ (University of Greenwich) and a MA in ‘Design for Digital Media’ (University of Portsmouth). Roger Rees – E-learning Adviser

Roger’s role is to support staff in the development and implementation of approaches to the application of technology to enhance learning and teaching. His role is particularly to contribute to enhancing and supporting the academic practices of staff through a range of professional development opportunities and co-ordinating a network of e-Learning Practitioners.

Roger joined the University of Surrey in August 2009. He has worked for over twenty years in a variety of roles in Further and Higher Education. These have included working as a Senior Lecturer, leading a number of successful JISC funded projects, and most recently as Head of Learning Enhancement and PPD at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication. He is qualified as a trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming and has a MA in Networked Media Environments, specialising in the application of emerging technology to enhance learning and collaboration. Roger’s areas of particular interest include exploring how current trends in digital and networked culture offer the potential for innovative and pedagogically sound approaches to enhancing learning, creativity and collaboration.
