The Centre for Environmental Strategy (CES) is one of the leading centre’s for sustainable development related research and postgraduate teaching in the UK. The particular strength of the Centre is the combination of engineering, natural and social sciences. CES has a 5A RAE rating, which reflects the Centre’s leadership in cutting edge research, and involvement in influential national and international projects.

In studying our MSc programme you will be taught by the Centre’s high profile academic staff and renowned researchers as well as leading experts from industry and public agencies. The Centre has influential links with policy makers, such as a seat on the Government’s Sustainable Development Commission, alongside strong links with industry which will help you to understand how the skills you obtain are used in both the private and public sectors.

All three Masters courses are multidisciplinary in nature, providing you with a robust background in social, environmental and economic issues. They have an applied focus providing you with the skills and expertise in the tools required to deal in a professional context with resource use and environmental management as well as policy issues.


The Aim of the Masters Programme

The aim of the programme is to prepare a new generation of environmental professionals to think critically, act pragmatically and ‘make a difference’. To provide hands on training for graduates enabling them to implement Environmental Management Systems including ISO 14001, undertake Sustainability Assessments and Life Cycle Assessments as well as introduce Corporate Social Responsibility programmes into organisations.

Distance Learning programme

Designed for those in full-time employment, a Postgraduate Certificate in Environmental Life Cycle Management is offered at CES. The Certificate is taken over one year and involves distance learning plus a maximum of five days away from the office. Recognising the importance of this qualification, the EPSRC offers a subsidy of £1000 on the full fee for UK and European citizens enrolling for 2005/06.

CES Seminars

In addition to the taught modules, you have the opportunity to participate in seminars held at the Centre throughout the year.
